Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes, story by Eric Litwin and art by James Dean

Jean-Louis’ Kids Book Pick

(HarperCollins 2011)

Have you ever had a book with which you have an immediate connection? Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes is just that kind of book. As soon as I saw this book I knew that I had discovered a sure fire winner—and not just for the little kid in me. This is a story of a very cool little cat named Pete who just happens to be a great singer, a very stylish dresser, and a really positive character. Whether he is just out for a stroll in his neighbourhood, or having fun at all of his school activities, Pete stays positive and goes on singing his songs.

Pete and the books about Pete were the inspiration for the Dauphin Library’s “I Love to Read” month outreach program to the city’s schools and daycares. Pete has become a hit all across town! Young readers are dropping by the library sporting their best shoes and singing the Pete songs. They are inspired by Pete’s positive attitude and his love of great books. He is so cool that he is also a YouTube sensation. Check it out and learn the songs—then get singing.

Two books already out are “I Love My White Shoes” and “Rocking in My School Shoes” and in May we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons. As I said, Pete is not just for kids. Check him out, find your funky shoes, and rock out to your own beat. And to paraphrase Pete, do it all again tomorrow because it is all good!
