Not my father’s son : a memoir by Alan Cumming

A biography pick by Shirley.  (HarperCollins, 2014)

I particularly like Eli Gold (a character played on the TV show “The Good Wife”).  He is funny, witty and unpredictable.  So when this biography of Alan Cumming (Eli Gold) came across my desk, I had to read it.  You think, what a life an actor must have, I have to read all about them.  What a shock to read this biography (just proves to us that actors and actresses are human and just like regular people too).

Alan grew up in Scotland and became an actor.  But his day to day life as a young boy was anything but happy.  Alan was abused and tormented by his father.  No child should ever have to go thru that, but then again you hear about it all the time.  As Alan deals with his past, he is asked to do a show for “Who do you think you are?” , a popular celebrity genealogy show.  He is wanting to trace what happened to his maternal grandfather after WWII.  Then his father tells Alan that he has a secret to tell him that will alter his life forever.

It is a very interesting read and the turmoil that Alan goes thru to try and sort out the details of his life, both past and present is haunting.  It is a fairly easy read and I would recommend this book to anyone.
