Out Standing in the Field by Sandra Perron

Cormorant Books, 2017

A non-fiction pick from Glenn

Here is a very readable tell-all memoir of Canada’s first female infantry officer.  Her father spent a career in the military and Sandra Perron too felt the call of duty.  The book traces her accession through the ranks from her very early beginnings as a cadet on through her decoration as a Van Doo officer and subsequent deployment overseas.  Sandra excelled at all of the challenges that were presented before her despite significant resistance to her desire to break into what was at the time a male-only profession.  She reveals details of the opposition and abuse that she endured in her quest to prove that women too can contribute in this role.  She contends that there are yet many obstacles for women wanting to serve in this way.  Four out of five stars for her honesty.
