Fiction pick by Jude
A well-crafted first novel by Joan Dempsey. She weaves some crucial social themes into different periods of time and parallels the bigotry and intolerance in the Holocaust period with the contemporary issues of sexual orientation and its impact on our workplace. It follows 3 generations of a Polish immigrant family in the USA and how a grandmother’s memories of Warsaw in WW11 are not that different to what her gay grandson is experiencing as a teacher in a public high school. Dempsey exposes the dangers of the religious extremism in the USA and its political influence on that country. The title says it all. I’ll be interested to read more books published by She Write Press.
